A Tale of Two Bridges
Goodbye Waldo-Hancock; hello Penobscot Narrows! 2005-12-30

Thumbnails open the snaps in a new window. Close to return here.
The first reassurance marker on westbound ME-196.
Leaving the Topsham Fair Mall.
Heh. No shields.
Joisey stylee black borders.
AUGH! No grade separation!
Why, MDOT, why?!
US-1: Bath Viaduct, Sagadahoc Bridge and Woolwich village.
Also visible is the Carlton Bridge, which carried US-1 traffic from 1927 to 2000.
Both thumbnails link to the same video.
AVI/XVID. Linux/Mac friendly.
Below right, at surface level, is an abandoned stretch of US-1.
It most likely flooded pretty frequently.
I've cruised by it many times but never yet stopped to check it out.
To the right is Weston Rd, an old alignment of US-1.
Eastbound in Newcastle before the Business {1} split, US-1's original alignment, River Road, splits off to parallel US-1 to the south.
Approaching the Business {1} split.
Left: Dig the rock cuts!
Center: Dig the triplet of [TO] signs for routes beginning in the Newcastle/Damariscotta area!
Right: Dig that letter B in the Business {1} shield!
On the Damariscotta bypass, a short Super-2.
Business {1} rejoins northbound US-1.
Some fine US-1 vistas on the way to Waldoboro.
Random JCT.
Hannafid, guy!
Northbound US-1 approaching END ME-235.
Left: Looking south on US-1 at ME-235's terminus.
Right: The first northbound reassurance marker.
Note to self: careful with the red wine & Photoshop.
Looking back at the junction.
No END sign in sight.
Scenic ME-235...
Turn right here and you're on a wrong-way multiplex with ME-235 & ME-131...
...But we turn left for a quick duplex with ME-131 & ME-17.
Scenic ME-131.
...For real.
ME-3 joins up with US-1 at Belfast's "beltway" - almost but not quite a Super-2.
US-1 / ME-3 Belfast bypass video.
All four thumbnails link to the same video.
Featuring a couple termini.
AVI. Video: XVID. Audio: PCM. Linux/Mac friendly.
The weather really gets crappy as we approach the US-1A split in Stockton Springs.
Dig that State Route 1A shield in the third snap.
Video of a drive across the Waldo-Hancock Bridge in each direction.
AVI. Video: XVID. Audio: PCM. Linux/Mac friendly.
I'm gonna stop writing captions for a while, deal?
Driving east across the Penobscot Narrows Bridge.
Some scenes from the Verona side.
Continuing on our journey...
Left: In Bucksport looking toward Verona; a rather anticlimactic bridge.
Right: Signage at the Bucksport side. Wrong-way`plex!
A couple poor quality shots of the west end of US-1 & ME-15's wrong-way multiplex.
Left: Looking east ("south") on ME-15 as US-1 and ME-3 join from the right.
Right: The first wrong-way signage, neatly obscured by the smudge on the windshield.
Looking west. On the left, the Bucksport town line and Cross Point Road; On the right, some wrong-way signage.
Okay, uhh.... so is it Acadia Hwy or US Route 1 or what?
The end of ME-46 can be glimpsed in the background.
Stopped to snap ME-46's southern terminus but got a bit sidetracked. AOOGA!
Looking compass east on {1} north, [3] east, and [15] south.
In the foreground, we see where ME-46 once diverged along a straighter path.
At the right, we see the route's been doglegged for a 90° intersection.
Three views of the route's end, with the ghost roadway in the last.
The first reassurance marker, right at the dogleg.
Looking compass west on {1} south, [3] west, and [15] north.
Looking east from the junction at some wrong-way signage.
Cameron Kaiser has a much better shot of this - I'd provide a link but am offline as I edit this.
Note the "Coastal" plate - as Cameron noted, not a standard banner type per AASHTO.
END! END! END!
I don't know, man, I didn't do it.
Left: eastbound signage as ME-15 prepares to leave the wrong-way`plex. And behind it we see...
Center: Poor Mailbox! To stay somewhat relevant there's some wrong-way signage visible in the background behind the mailbox arm.
Right: Backing up a bit - note the distance of the bridge from the road edge. The roadway used to continue straight to ME-15 as an old alignment of US-1.
ME-15 comes north into the wrong-way`plex on Front Ridge Rd.
Looking into the east end of the wrong-way`plex in Orland.
END!
Left: ME-199's northern terminus as seen from ME-15 south.
Center: Heading down the hill at the beginning of ME-199 south.
Right: Looking back at the end and its signage.
Some poor quality wrong-way duplex video.
[insert diatribe about camera here.]
Left: Entering the duplex from ME-199 south.
Right: Missing my turn onto ME-175 north, and looking for a place with both traction and visibility to make a turn.
END!
Left: Signage looking west on ME-175 "north".
Center: Just around the corner lies the first southbound reassurance marker on ME-166.
Right: Signage as you approach ME-166's northern end.
Aborting mission due to darkness, I catch one more angle of ME-175's END as I turn homeward.
Back in Verona, the VMS before the bridge reads, "BRIDGE OPEN" / "HAPPY NEW YEAR"
Back at the western terminus of US-1A in Stockton Springs...
It's signed with a state route shield both east and westbound.
I'm glad I didn't take ME-3 and I-95, despite the weather...
I found a wrong-way`plex I missed on the way in!
This hadn't been on my list, either, as overall, ME-173 runs more east-west, and I'd expected it to be signed as such.
And now, snapping the west end of the ME-131/235 wrong-way`plex from a different angle.

Back to The Maine Drag.
