(84) [4] STACK!
Farmington, CT - 2006-04-11

I had a dream I took a walk on Connecticut's stack interchage. When I awoke I photochopped together these pics of what such a hike might look like before I lost the muse.

Thumbnails open the snaps in a new window. Close to return here.
Eastbound on I-84, approaching the exit 39A stack.
Either we're near Fishkill NY, or US-9 has been rerouted to serve the Westfarms Mall...
Ramps from I-84 merge in from the left.
What was to be the I-291 NB mainline enters behind the detritus in the center.
Median guardrail is visible background right.
Middle Rd is maybe 30 meters behind the camera.
Looking south along the northbound lanes of "291" as they descend from the stack.
Dig the concrete lanes and asphalt shoulders...
ConnDOT even went as far as to install guardrails.

LEFT: The I-291 mainline passes over I-84, with ramps from and to I-84 passing over it.
RIGHT: Looking west near the center of the stack. The ramp immediately overhead today carries traffic from I-84 West to CT-9 South. Of the top-level ramps, visible in the middle of the photo, the closer carries the CT-9 -> I-84 W movement. The further one remains unused.
LEFT: Maine graffiti runs to the juvenile end of the spectrum. Connecticut's young ruffians are much more erudite.
RIGHT: In the right lane now. View from the never-opened I-291 North.
South Rd overpass. The north end of CT-9 (originally just the ramps from proposed I-291) passes over South Rd on the left (dig the gantry behind the trees). The mound of dirt behind the bridge keeps CT-9 traffic out of this area.
Emerging onto the beginning of CT-9 South.
LEFT: A geometric jumble of supporting structures.
RIGHT: Flyoverly grandeur.
YEAH! Now that's my kind of tag, baby!
LEFT: On the ramp to I-291 North, I believe.
RIGHT: The ramps from I-84 merge to form the roadway pictured to the left.
LEFT: On Friday nights in July, the roadgeeks come camp out with the youth ministers and throw keggers.
CENTER: This sign looks a little misplaced: TMK The West Hartford town line crosses Middle Rd / Tunxis Rd at Woodruff Rd, and runs along the north side of Middle Rd north of the interchange.
RIGHT: St. Paul of the Cross, the founder of the Passionist Congregation.
