The western terminus of SR 196 is at US 202 at the corner of Main Street and Lincoln Street in Lewiston.

Historic eastern terminus: Monument Place & US 201 in Topsham.
SR 196 was extended eastward when the Coastal Connector opened in 1997. The junction with US 201 was moved two blocks north in the process.
